reading in bed or anywhere for that matter

Isn’t reading in bed the most wonderful way to start your day?  Especially if you have a deliciously robust cup of coffee in your favorite mug and a slice of toast with butter and marmalade.  Up at the cabin I have been reading 19 varieties of Gazelle by Naomi Shihab Nye and this unexpectedly beautiful book called How to talk to birds by Richard Davids which I found in a thrift shop for a dollar.  In the world of photography I am enjoying ‘L’orient d’un photographie’ which I find simply stunning beyond belief. Stormy weather has a way of enticing you between the pages of a good book as well ~ tell me, what have you read lately that you might recommend to me?

today a poem for you…

Did you ever see a bee’s little bucket?
I was 39 before I saw.  Dipping into flowers,
the bee holds the bucket with it’s feet,
filling it, flying home pollen~rich
and if someone puts a screen at the mouth
of the hive, the bucket catches when
the bee flies in. It has a handle.

Where does it get the bucket?
It spins it from it’s own body.
Why are bees so lucky?

And the boy in my house stoops
to the ground, gathering clipped grass,
piling mountains on the sidewalk,
light draining quietly from the street.
Saying “Stop,” saying “Watch,”
and I want to, because in this world
there is nothing better to do.

Naomi Shihab Nye
oh! and a song of course... and for all you sketchbook lovers out there aaaand something for the upper lip vigilantes

Oh yes, reading in bed. I usually do it at night and not so often in the morning, but when I do it’s always special.
I read a really funny book called “A short story of tractors in ukranian” – it has little to do with the title but it’s extremely enjoyable.

    Ah Nina :)

Oh, that does sound good, Maddie. Crumbs I might not be able to handle in bed but coffee and a good book – yes! I just read a book called Little Bee by Chris Cleave that was very good. It’s about a teenager from Nigeria who escapes the horrors of war in her country to the UK where she spends two years in a detention center. When she’s “released”, she searches out a British couple she met on a beach back in Nigeria. I couldn’t put it down! It would make a great movie one day, too. With all British actors.

Oh, and if you want a fun read, there’s The Guersney Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Makes me wish that the characters were real and that I could meet them in person. :)

I love reading your blogs…so inspiring! I just finished reading a little book titled “The End of the Alphabet”. I don’t remember the author, but it is a new release, so it should not be hard to find.

“Still Alice”, a short book about a woman who gets Alzheimers, written from her point of view. Poignant and illuminating. I didn’t think I would like it because of the subject matter but it was recommended to me and I really enjoyed it.
“The Wedding Officer” , Naples during the war, food, romance, lush & sensual, interesting, historical.
