Susanna’s winged messenger at the country fair
Susanna’s winged messenger poetically swaying in the warm evening breeze of the county fair
The other evening we went to the Fayette county fair where I found myself transported back in time to a warm country evening strolling the fairgrounds, admiring the blue ribboned prize winning tomatoes, pokeberries and runner beans. Snacking on fish sandwiches, (the perogies were all sold out, alas) french fries smothered in melted cheese whiz and ice cold Pepsi. (glancing longingly, but full, at the banana cream pies) The petting zoo was adorable as children lined up to purchase baby bottles filled with milk to offer the goats, llama’s and ambling piglets. There were soft rabbits, indifferent roosters and a horse named Ruby that captured my heart with his kissable nose and warm liquid eyes.
And oh, lest I forget, I am clearly not to old for the carnival as we hopped in line for the spinning rides, haunted castle and the twirling swings which spun us up up up laughingly into the indigo sky under the amiable gaze of the full moon. A word of caution however….french fries smothered in hot melted cheese whiz is not the best compliment to fiercely spinning rides:)
Strolling along I passed by a lovely carousel ride all bedecked in lights and color and music …and it was here that I decided to set one of Susanna’s winged messengers free. Children ran by with great exuberance and I happen to know for a fact that one happy child with four siblings was bold enough to take Susanna’s winged messenger home ~ cradled gently and admiringly by her astonished father. A most perfect ending to a wonderful night:)
and just in case you feel like jumping...the perfectly perfect tune:)…aaaaand out of the closet with sea to sky on a sunday

I have a real fondness for county fairs, especially the 4-H exhibitions. Pretty photo.

When I read the perogies were all sold out, I felt sad.
Mmmm, perogies. The ice cold Pepsi saved the day!
{Beautiful account of the whimsical day!}

You are a braver soul than I, the spinning rides are off my list now, though I would gladly partake in the cheese laden fries or the perogies.
Sounds like an enchanting day

What a beautiful description of a well spent day. How wonderful that Susanna’s wings went home with a child…there is not a more poetic soul than that of a child

God, you just get lovelier and lovelier. I never get to blog as much as I have in the past, but every time I come here I feel blessed.
Stay lovely.

A day spent at a country fair is a always a day worth remembering! I love the excitement and feeling of community pride. Everybody beaming and busy. I would have had the banana cream pie instead of the fries:))

Its as though I could feel the fair grounds, under my feet. And the sound of a merry go round swirling in the night air. Did they have cotton candy? Just asking, because that is what I would want to share with you. Warm, spun sugar. xo, my friend. ; )

Hi Maddie,
Thank you for opening the comments again and as always for a wonderful post, sharing your most joyous moments. It felt as if I was also there on the ferris wheel – life is a ferris wheel isn’t it. You go up and you go down, thank god, you go up again. Best,

such a lovely day spent poking amongst all the exhibits and vendors. sweet and savory treats (sniff, the perogies were gone.) and all the spinny rides. love watching all the tummy brave on the rides as they spin & whirl. and to let the winged messanger go on the carousel was inspired. glad that a child with the beauty of dreams was the lucky one to give the winged messanger a good home. ~C8>

I’m new here but have been drinking in the loveliness of your blog. I found you via Liz at Be Present, Be Here. I live one county over from Fayette County. Let me know if you ever come by this way again! But I don’t know how you can tear yourself away from the Pacific Northwest. I visited there for the first time last month and am smitten!

I love reading your posts, Maddie. You know how to create a scene so that I am there with you, walking through the fair, looking at the blinking lights on the swirling rides, smelling the animals and the hay, hearing the happy sounds of excited children… And thank you for taking the winged messengers with you to the fair. I LOVE the thought that a little someone took them home with her. Thank you for that, my friend.
Btw, I tried posting to your blog several times this last week and my comments weren’t accepted. Not sure why… BUT I’m glad that they finally are going through.
